Understanding the Autism Diagnostic Process

An autism diagnosis requires a thoughtful, step-by-step approach.

At AuDHD Psychiatry, our clinicians combine structured interviews, internationally recognised criteria, and gold-standard diagnostic tools to ensure a comprehensive and accurate evaluation.

Diagnostic Criteria & Tools

✅ Structured Diagnostic Process

Sessions using validated tools and diagnostic criteria such as:

  • DSM-5 criteria for autism
  • ICD-11 criteria

✅ Screening Tools

Behavioural checklists, rating scales, and functional assessments tailored to age and context.

✅ Diagnostic Assessment Report & Feedback

A clear summary of findings, with personalised recommendations for support and next steps.

What to Expect:

Clinical Steps in the Process

• Complete our secure online forms covering your background, developmental history, education/work, health, and current support needs.
• If possible, invite someone who knew you in childhood to complete an informant questionnaire (helpful but not mandatory).
• Upload any previous reports or diagnoses; tell us who you’d like the final report shared with (e.g., GP, employer, university).

• One or more in-depth appointments (video or in-person) with an experienced clinician.
• We explore lifelong patterns in social communication, flexibility/routines, sensory processing, and the impact on day-to-day life.
• We consider masking/camouflaging, strengths, and any co-occurring difficulties (e.g., ADHD, anxiety).

• We use validated adult measures where indicated (for example: AQ-10/AQ, RAADS-R, CAT-Q, SRS-2, and observational tools such as ADOS-2 Module 4 when clinically appropriate).
• When helpful, we may request informant input (family/partner/teacher from childhood) to build a fuller picture.
• All information is triangulated against DSM-5 / ICD-11 criteria to ensure an evidence-based decision.

• You receive a clear diagnostic report explaining the findings (whether criteria are met), plus a formulation of strengths, differences, and support needs.
• Practical recommendations for workplace reasonable adjustments, education support, and signposting to services (e.g., Access to Work).
• Optional follow-up to go through the report and plan next steps (coaching/therapy, skills support, referral letters).

Mental Fatigue from Masking

Mental Fatigue from Masking

Constantly trying to “fit in” can be exhausting. Many adults unconsciously mask their natural behaviours, which can lead to burnout, anxiety, or a sense of disconnect.

Need for Routine and Predictability

Need for Routine and Predictability

Sudden changes or unclear plans can feel overwhelming. Having predictable routines helps reduce stress and creates a sense of safety.

Challenges in Social Settings

Challenges in Social Settings

Small talk, group conversations, or picking up on non-verbal cues can feel confusing or draining — even with people they know well.

Sensory Sensitivities

Sensory Sensitivities

Everyday environments — like supermarkets, offices, or public transport — might feel too loud, too bright, or simply too much.

Despite the challenges, understanding autism can bring a powerful sense of self-awareness and relief. A diagnosis isn’t about labelling — it’s about clarity, self-compassion, and finding the right support.
