Child ADHD Treatment & Medication Pathway

Regular reviews, careful dose adjustments, and collaborative care with families and GPs.

For children assessed by our clinicians.

What this pathway is

A structured ADHD medication and support pathway for children and young people.
Built around careful monitoring, parental involvement, and clear clinical oversight from start to shared care.

Starting Medications

Usually started after diagnosis once physical health checks, parent discussion, and safety screening are complete.
We explain options clearly and agree a plan with you before prescribing.

Titration phase

Typically 6 to 12 weeks, depending on how your child responds.
We adjust doses carefully, monitor side effects, and review feedback from home and school where appropriate.

Shared care

Once your child is stable on medication, we request shared care with your GP.
Acceptance depends on individual GP policies. We provide structured reports to support this process.

Making Sure This Child Medication Pathway Is Right For Your Family

Prescriptions are issued through our regulated pharmacy partner to ensure safe dispensing and continuity of care. Paper prescriptions can be provided on request, though processing times may vary in line with Scottish prescribing regulations.

This is for you if

• Your child has completed an ADHD assessment with us
• You are ready to complete required safety checks (for example GP summary, physical health information, blood pressure, height and weight)
• You want structured, clinician-led medication titration rather than a one-off prescription
• You want regular review appointments during dose adjustment
• You want guidance on side effects and monitoring
• You understand that parental involvement is required throughout treatment
• You are open to shared care with your GP once your child is stable on medication

It might not be right today if

• Your child needs urgent or crisis mental health support
• You are seeking medication without structured monitoring
• You are unable to complete the required safety checks
• Your child already has an NHS or private prescriber managing ADHD medication
• You are only seeking shared care transfer without ongoing clinical oversight
• You live outside the UK and primarily require medication supply

If your child is in crisis or you are concerned about immediate safety, please contact NHS 111, your GP, CAMHS, or emergency services rather than booking a medication appointment.

Medication Cost

If you decide to start your child’s ADHD medication after the assessment, here’s a clear breakdown of what to expect.

Initial Medication Appointment £295

This 45 to 60 minute appointment is where your child’s medication pathway begins.

The clinician reviews the assessment, physical health information, and discusses treatment options with you as the parent or carer.

We explain how medication works, possible side effects, and what monitoring is required.

If appropriate, the first prescription may be issued following safety checks.
To prepare:

• Bring recent height, weight, blood pressure and GP summary (if requested)
• Share any concerns about sleep, appetite or behaviour
• Consider what changes you hope to see at home or school

Titration and Follow Up (£195 per appointment)

Most children require 3 to 4 follow-up appointments, usually spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart.

During titration we:
• Adjust dose gradually
• Monitor side effects
• Review feedback from parents (and school where appropriate)
• Track height, weight and physical health

The goal is a stable, effective dose with manageable side effects.
Every child responds differently. Some stabilise sooner, some need longer.

Prescriptions, Medication Costs and Shared Care

During titration, prescriptions are private.

Medication costs typically range from £50 to £120 per month depending on type and dose.

Repeat prescription fee:
• £45 via our pharmacy partner
• £55 if sent to your local pharmacy

Once your child is stable, we request shared care with your GP.

If accepted, prescribing transfers to the NHS.
If declined, we continue private prescribing with ongoing reviews every 6 months (£295).

Screening call frequently asked questions

It is normal to have questions before you book.

Taking the first steps to understand your symptoms can feel overwhelming, but our team is ready to guide you with clarity and support.

Once your child’s GP summary and blood pressure readings are submitted, we schedule your child’s Initial Medication Appointment. Most patients start medication within 1 to 2 weeks after their assessment.

To make sure medication is safe for your child. ADHD meds affect heart rate and blood pressure, so we need accurate readings and a brief medical history before prescribing anything.

It’s a 45 to 60 minute session where your clinician reviews your child’s symptoms, lifestyle, medical history, and treatment goals.
If medication is suitable, your child will get their first prescription at the end of the appointment.

Most people need around 3 to 4 follow up appointments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. Some need fewer, some need more. The goal is a stable dose that works without problematic side effects.

Private prescriptions are:
£45 using our online pharmacy service
£55 if we send you the prescription directly
Medication itself usually costs £50 to £120 per month and is paid to the pharmacy.
