Why it matters

Why an Autism Assessment for Your Child?

Why get your child an autism assessment?
Many parents spend years sensing that everyday life feels harder for their child than it should.
  • Make sense of their experiences with friendships, sensory overload or change
  • Replace worry and guesswork with a clear explanation
  • Get practical recommendations for home, school and everyday life
  • Access the right support at school and going forward
Particularly helpful for
Autism can look very different from the stereotypes, and is often missed in childhood. We see this often across:
  • Children who mask at school
  • Girls, whose traits often present differently
  • Children seen as anxious, shy or “just difficult”
What to expect from us
We take a neuro-affirming, whole-family approach from your first call through to support after diagnosis, not just a one-off report.
  • A thorough autism assessment for your child, usually completed within about a week
  • A detailed developmental interview with you, and a clear feedback session explaining the results
  • Input from your child’s school welcomed where it’s helpful
  • Clear guidance for home and school after diagnosis, not just a report

Your child’s autism assessment

Book the assessment for a time that suits you. Appointments are usually available within a week. It is an online session with your child, led by a specialist psychologist who is neurodivergent themselves, paced around your child at home.
More about the assessment
The parent interview covers your child’s early development, from their first years to now, and how things are at home, at school and with friends. If your child’s school has shared reports or observations, you’re welcome to send them to us too. A clinical or counselling psychologist leads your child’s assessment, with input from a second clinician, and everyone’s findings are reviewed as a whole by our clinical team.
  • The ADOS, adapted for online delivery, through conversation and age-appropriate activities
  • Breaks whenever your child needs them
  • A separate, in-depth developmental interview with you
Within a week

Questions and answers

Child Autism Assessment FAQs

Quick answers to the questions people ask us most before booking.

What if I think my child might have ADHD too?

Many children show traits of both, and autism and ADHD often overlap. If that sounds like your child, our combined AuDHD assessment looks at both in one coordinated pathway, so you don’t need to go through your child’s history twice. Mention it on your free consultation call and we’ll help you decide which assessment fits best.

Is there a single test for autism?

No single test can diagnose autism on its own. Instead, we combine a session with your child, a developmental interview with you, validated questionnaires and clinical observation, carried out by experienced psychologists. This helps us tell autism apart from things it’s often confused with, such as anxiety, ADHD or speech and language difficulties. Every assessment follows NICE guidance and is diagnosed against the DSM-5 criteria used across the UK and internationally.

Do I need a GP referral to book?

No, a GP referral isn’t required. You can book your child’s assessment directly through our website, and we’ll confirm the appointment straight away, with no waiting for a referral or approval from anyone else.

How soon can my child be seen?

Appointments are available within 7 days of booking, not the months or years-long waits that are common elsewhere. Once the appointment is confirmed, we’ll guide you through everything you need beforehand, including any forms or questionnaires, so you and your child feel prepared when the day arrives.

Is an online autism assessment reliable for children?

Yes. Assessments are carried out over video call by the same clinicians and to the same clinical standard as an in-person appointment. Many children feel more relaxed and more like themselves at home, which helps us see how they really are, and it doesn’t matter where in the UK you’re based.

What age does my child need to be?

We assess children from age 6. If your child is younger, book a free consultation call and we’ll talk through your options. For young people aged 18 and over, our adult autism assessment is the right fit.

What if my child masks at school?

Masking – consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic traits to fit in – is very common, especially in girls and in children who hold it together all day at school and then struggle at home. Our clinicians know it well and are trained to look beyond it. We don’t rely only on how your child presents on the day; we also draw on their developmental history, your account and questionnaires. Your child won’t need to prove anything, and masking won’t stop us understanding them.

What happens if my child doesn’t receive a diagnosis?

We’ll always talk you through the results in detail. If your child doesn’t meet the criteria for autism, we’ll explain our reasoning and discuss other possible explanations for what you’ve been noticing. Where it would help, we’ll point you toward other appropriate support, whether that’s back to your GP, your child’s school or another service that makes more sense for your family.

Will the report be accepted by my child’s GP and school?

Our reports are accepted by most GPs and schools, and include school support documentation to help put reasonable adjustments and classroom support in place. That said, how an individual organisation chooses to act on a report is ultimately down to their own policy, so it’s worth checking directly with them if you have a specific requirement.

What support is available after my child’s diagnosis?

Autism itself isn’t treated with medication, so your child’s report includes practical recommendations to help day to day, at home, at school and with friendships. We talk these through with you in your feedback session, and the school support documentation helps you put the right adjustments in place. If ADHD is also suspected, we can talk through assessment and treatment options for that too.

What if my child has already been assessed elsewhere?

If your child has already had an assessment elsewhere, we can review the existing report and talk through your options. That might mean a second opinion, ongoing support, or shared care going forward – whatever’s most useful for your family.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We offer payment plans through Klarna, letting you split the cost into 3 monthly payments, so cost doesn’t have to be a barrier to getting your child assessed.
