Why an Autism Assessment?

Why get an autism assessment as an adult?

Many adults spend years wondering why things feel harder than they look. An autism assessment gives you a clear, evidence-based answer, led by HCPC-registered psychologists using recognised diagnostic tools, and a plan for support that fits how you actually experience the world.

It can help you:
  • Make sense of lifelong experiences with social situations, sensory overload or change
  • Replace years of self-doubt with a clear explanation
  • Get practical recommendations for work, study and everyday life
  • Access reasonable adjustments and the right support going forward
Particularly helpful for

Autism can look very different from the stereotypes, and is often missed until adulthood. We see this often across:

  • Adults who’ve masked or compensated for years: learned coping strategies can hide traits well, sometimes even from the person themselves.
  • Women, whose traits often present differently: presentations that don’t fit the traditional, often male-based picture are frequently missed or misdiagnosed.
  • Adults who’ve been misdiagnosed or misunderstood: anxiety, depression or burnout are sometimes diagnosed on their own when autism is the underlying explanation.
What to expect from us

We take a neuro-affirming, whole-person approach from your first call through to ongoing support, not just a one-off report.

What this includes:
  • A thorough autism assessment, with appointments available within 7 days
  • An optional informant call and a clear feedback session explaining the results
  • Input welcomed from a partner, parent, sibling or close friend where it’s helpful, but never required
  • Ongoing support after diagnosis, including coaching, not just a report

2. Comprehensive Autism Assessment

A 90-minute call with a consultant psychologist who is neurodivergent themselves.

  • Explores your current experiences and history — work, education, relationships and everyday life
  • Uses the ADI-R, adapted for online delivery, to see how autism actually presents for you, including masked traits — not stereotypes
  • A collaborative conversation, not a sudden verdict — you’ll understand how we reach our conclusions, and leave feeling understood

3. Optional Informant Interview

A separate interview with someone who knows you well, if you’d like to include one. It’s optional and never required.

  • Can be a partner, parent, sibling or close friend
  • They don’t need to have known you as a child
  • Adds another perspective on how autism shows up in your everyday life

Where they knew you growing up, it also helps us understand your early development. If there’s no one you’d like to involve, we can still carry out a thorough assessment using your own account, our clinical observations and questionnaires.

A clinical or counselling psychologist leads your assessment, with input from a second clinician, and everyone’s findings are brought together and reviewed as a whole by our clinical team.

4. Outcome, report and feedback

Your case is reviewed by our clinical team together, so your outcome is considered from more than one perspective, not just a single clinician’s view.

We talk you through what we found and what it means, in plain language, with time for your questions and no rush. Because we’ve gone through everything with you along the way, there’s nothing at the end you won’t have seen coming.

You’ll get a short letter confirming your diagnosis the day after your assessment, so you’re not left waiting for the essentials. Your full written report follows within two weeks, ready to use with your GP, employer or university.

Coaching and support after diagnosis

Woman feeling calm and supported during post-diagnosis coaching

  • Coaching built around your own goals, not a generic programme
  • Practical strategies for work, study, relationships and sensory needs
  • Help turning your report’s recommendations into real adjustments
  • Ongoing support from a team who understand autism from the inside

Adult Autism Assessment FAQs

Many people recognise traits of both, and autism and ADHD often overlap. If that sounds like you, our combined AuDHD assessment looks at both in one coordinated pathway, so you don’t need to repeat your history twice. Mention it on your free consultation call and we’ll help you decide which assessment fits best.

No single test can diagnose autism on its own. Instead, we use a structured combination of clinical interviews, validated questionnaires, and clinical observation, carried out by experienced psychologists. This helps us tell autism apart from conditions it’s often confused with, such as social anxiety or ADHD. Every assessment follows NICE guidance and is diagnosed against the DSM-5 criteria used across the UK and internationally.

No, a GP referral isn’t required. You can book any of our assessments directly through our website, and we’ll confirm your appointment straight away, with no waiting for a referral or approval from anyone else.

Appointments are available within 7 days of booking, not the months-long waits that are common elsewhere. Once your appointment is confirmed, we’ll guide you through everything you need beforehand, including any forms or questionnaires, so you’re fully prepared when the day arrives.

Yes. Assessments are carried out over video call by the same clinicians and to the same clinical standard as an in-person appointment. Many people find being in their own space helps them feel more relaxed and able to be themselves, and it doesn’t matter where in the UK you’re based.

No, it’s optional. We do recommend one if you can, as someone who knows you well, such as a partner, parent, sibling or close friend, can add helpful detail. They don’t need to have known you as a child. If there’s no one you’d like to involve, we can still carry out a thorough assessment using your own account, our clinical observations, and questionnaires.

Masking – consciously or unconsciously hiding autistic traits to fit in – is very common, especially in women and in adults who’ve spent years compensating. Our clinicians know it well and are trained to look beyond it. We don’t rely only on how you present on the day; we also draw on your life history, questionnaires, and, where available, informant input. You won’t need to prove anything, and masking won’t stop us understanding you.

We’ll always talk you through the results in detail. If you don’t meet the criteria for autism, we’ll explain our reasoning and discuss other possible explanations for what you’ve been experiencing. Where it would help, we’ll point you toward other appropriate support, whether that’s back to your GP or another service that makes more sense for you.

Our reports are accepted by most GPs, employers and universities, and can support requests for reasonable adjustments or Access to Work. That said, how an individual organisation chooses to act on a report is ultimately down to their own policy, so it’s worth checking directly with them if you have a specific requirement.

Autism itself isn’t treated with medication, so your report includes practical recommendations to help day to day, at work, at home and in relationships. We also offer coaching from psychologists who specialise in autism, helping you put those recommendations into practice. If ADHD is also suspected, we can talk through assessment and treatment options for that too.

If you’ve already had an assessment elsewhere, we can review your existing report and talk through your options. That might mean a second opinion, ongoing support, or shared care going forward – whatever’s most useful for you.

Yes. We offer payment plans through Klarna, letting you split the cost into 3 monthly payments, so cost doesn’t have to be a barrier to getting assessed.
